[FRANKFORT] (WLFI) — Clinton County Emergency Medical Services is leading the way as the first EMS agency in the U.S. to implement the new SPEAX Communication System in the field.
SPEAX allows patients on ventilation to engage more fully in their care. Traditional non-invasive ventilation methods, like CPAP and BiPAP, often hinder communication due to tight-fitting masks.
The SPEAX device addresses this by using a patch on the mask and a portable communicator to amplify the patient's voice.
Clinton County EMS Director Steven Deckard says. "It's been a game changer," Previously, communication with ventilated patients relied on yes or no questions and hand signals. Now, patients can participate in conversations about their care.
Deckard spoke with the manufacturer to adapt SPEAX for pre-
