McLaren boss Andrea Stella says the Formula 1 drivers' championship is still in his team's hands despite Max Verstappen's dominant performance at the US Grand Prix.

Australian Oscar Piastri still leads the drivers' standings by 14 points from McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

Red Bull Racing's Verstappen — chasing a fifth title in a row — is 40 points off the lead, having slashed the gap from 104 at the end of August with three wins in the last four races.

Verstappen won the US Grand Prix in Austin on Monday and triumphed in the sprint the previous day.

There are five rounds remaining in the F1 championship.

Stella said McLaren was not panicking about Verstappen's resurgence.

He said his team expected the Dutchman to be a contender this late in the championship.
