Northern Territory government backbenchers have racked up thousands of dollars in travel costs as "assistant ministers", a position the Country Liberal Party (CLP) previously labelled as "gammon".

The travel costs have been revealed by an ABC Freedom of Information (FOI) request after the chief minister's office refused to provide them in July.

The document shows three of the government's eight backbenchers charged taxpayers a combined $11,000 to travel as an "assistant minister" — a title not officially recognised by the NT Parliament.
