Tommy Nguyen, 25, was convicted of striking and killing construction worker Jose Nieves Diaz last June. On Monday, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison, suspended after seven, with five years of probation.

Nguyen has maintained that it was an accident, and that it was caused by a seizure. It was an emotional day in court for the family of Nieves Diaz and for the family of Nguyen, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in August.

"Seven years is not going to bring my brother back but at least he got something,” said Zenadia Diaz, who is Jose’s sister.
