TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - On Monday, the University of Arizona announced it declined the White House’s Compact for Academic Excellence offer.

In a letter sent to the university community, President Suresh Garimella wrote that the school has not agreed to the terms in the draft proposal. There was allegedly a Monday deadline for the school’s response, but that may have changed.

Garimella said the school got an update, and the federal government claimed it was “seeking constructive dialogue rather than a definitive written response.”

While the school declined the compact offer, Garimella wrote that “a number of the proposed federal recommendations deserve thoughtful consideration as our national higher education system could benefit from reforms that have been much too slow to develop.”
