Multiple web platforms used by the University of Alaska System went down Monday, as part of an ongoing global outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) that began Sunday night.

AWS is an online cloud system that allows companies to store and manage data using its database service DynamoDB. A software update to DynamoDB caused a domino effect of errors which meant disruptions to many major websites like Netflix, Reddit, Venmo, The Associated Press and game sites Roblox and Fortnite.

Included in the sites affected are third-party services UA uses that are housed on the AWS cloud server. Canvas and Blackboard are two learning management systems utilized by students, professors and administration as a classroom landing site for tests, assignments and general classroom tasks.
