ROCHESTER, Minn. — Rochester Public Schools recently reviewed a proposal aimed at accommodating students observing religious holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Eid.

Superintendent Kent Pekel said he does not support giving these days off from school, as it would extend the academic year. Instead, the proposal suggests classroom modifications. The proposal recommends that teachers refrain from assigning tests or major assignments on these holidays and avoid scheduling field trips. Absences for students observing religious holidays will continue to be excused.

"We want to educate the whole child in Rochester Public Schools," Pekel said. "For many of our children, their families, faith traditions is part of that. We, of course, are neutral in those decisions. We also need the academic time
