HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii Island Police Department has opened a negligent homicide investigation after a pedestrian was fatally hit on Highway 19.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a pedestrian walking in dark clothing along Highway 19, near the 47-mile marker, heading towards Honoka’a.

Police say they witnessed a 53-year-old woman driving a Toyota 4Runner suddenly swerve before discovering a man lying on the roadway.

Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures, which were continued by Hawaii Fire Department personnel upon their arrival.

The pedestrian, who was not in a marked crosswalk, was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and family notification.
