The former mayor of Fall River, Massachusetts, was seriously injured in a stabbing Monday afternoon, according to police in the city.

Officers responded to multiple calls reporting the stabbing on Hartwell Street, finding Will Flanagan suffering from "significant injuries," the Fall River Police Department said.

Flanagan is in serious but stable condition at an area hospital.

Police said they are working to identify and apprehend the person responsible for the stabbing.

Flanagan left office after losing a recall election in 2014 .
