SAINT PAUL, Minn. — It's a felony for a noncitizen to vote in a Minnesota election, punishable by deportation, and only a few people have been convicted for such a crime over the last decade.

But, a public exchange related to noncitizen voting — involving Republican state legislators and the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office last week — has been shared widely on social media in recent days and even made its way to Joe Rogan's podcast on Friday.

The exchange occurred during an Oct. 14 House Fraud Prevention meeting at the state capitol, and involved questions from GOP lawmakers about whether the state's Driver's License for All law could allow more people to use those IDs to register to vote under same-day registration.
