COLUMBUS — One person is dead Sunday morning in an accident with a train passing through Columbus.

Nick Jacobs with Columbus Fire and Rescue confirmed the fatality; emergency responders spent much of Sunday morning at the scene. Columbus Police shut down traffic at the town's two railroad crossings while investigators evaluated the scene.

A BNSF train engine with a number of railcars was stopped on the tracks. The train company declined to comment on the incident and instead directed questions to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating.

The two railroad crossings were expected to be closed for most of Sunday afternoon, Columbus Police said in a statement on social media.
