Midway through his second season at a new job, Jay Johnson was stripped of his play-calling duties.

The second-year Wyoming offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who spent the previous four seasons at Michigan State was demoted, head coach Jay Sawvel announced on Monday.

“These are difficult, difficult decisions,” Sawvel said, “because Jay Johnson is a great person, he’s a very, very good football coach.”

The Cowboys (3-4, 1-2 Mountain West) have dropped four of five, rank 85th in the nation in total offense and are tied for 114th in scoring. Those numbers aren’t much different than a year ago and led to Sawvel making a change with receivers coach Jovon Bouknight taking over as coordinator. Johnson decided to stay on staff in an analyst role.
