The Rangers had already become the first team in NHL history to be shut out in their first three home games of the season when they lost to Edmonton last Tuesday. And if they didn’t score early in the first period Monday against the Minnesota Wild, there was potentially more unwanted history coming their way.

A first-minute goal by Artemi Panarin spared them the indignity of breaking the record for most minutes held without a goal on home ice to start a season, set by the now-defunct Pittsburgh Pirates. But while they avoided that, the Rangers still have not won a game this season at Madison Square Garden. Panarin’s goal was the only one they scored as they lost to the Wild, 3-1, to fall to 0-4 at the Garden this season.
