There are often discussions on who has the moral high ground in American political life. Simply put, the moral high ground, in ethical, political and/or religious considerations means to adhere to upholding universally recognized standards of justice and goodness despite the circumstances.

When American evangelicals first became involved in partisan politics as a group, many mistakenly believed that because of their profession of high moral and ethical standards, they would raise the level of political discourse in American politics.
