STANWOOD, Mich. — An 81-year-old man from Saugatuck drowned Monday night while working on his houseboat at the Newaygo Boat Club in Stanwood.
The man had been reportedly working on the roof of his houseboat when he was suddenly unaccounted for, according to authorities.
Deputies with the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. and began searching for the man.
They used sonar equipment, which detected a possible object "consistent with a person" in the water, according to the sheriff's office.
The dive team responded to the scene and successfully recovered the man within ten minutes of entering the water.
Emergency responders immediately initiated life-saving measures. However, they were unable to resuscitate the man and he was pronounced dead at the sce
