Madurai's Vaigai River recorded a sharp rise in water levels following heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, triggering a flood alert.
The Regional Meteorological Department said a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, bringing more rain to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next 24 hours.
Heavy rain has been forecast for the ghat areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu, and also for parts of Kerala. In Chennai and nearby districts, the weather office said there may be one or two spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
