Pune, Oct 21: A political controversy erupted in Pune after a group of Hindu organisations led by BJP MP Medha Kulkarni held a “purification ceremony” at Shaniwar Wada, following a viral video showing Muslim women offering Namaz at the historic fort.

A clip showed the leaders cleaning the spot with gaumutra (cow urine) and performing Shiv Vandana. Kulkarni described the incident as a “matter of concern and outrage for every Punekar” and urged strict action, saying, “Shaniwar Wada is not the place to offer Namaz… we tried to hoist a saffron flag but officials stopped us.”

Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane also condemned Namaz at the fort, stressing that Hindu sentiments must also be respected in religious spaces.
