JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- A man shot by police in Jersey City has died after officials say he opened fire on officers.

According to Mayor Steve Fulop, officers observed a person acting suspiciously with a bulge in their clothing on Bergen Avenue around 1 a.m.

The individual opened fire on an officer as they approached and the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect.

The suspect was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and a gun was recovered at the scene.

Officials are asking residents to stay clear of the are around Ege Avenue and Bergen Avenue.

Several blocks in the area were taped off as the State Attorney General's Office and the Hudson County Prosecutors Office investigate.
