WAIMEA — A man died following a kayak-related incident in waters near Lucy Wright Beach Park.

On Saturday, at approximately 6 p.m., first responders were dispatched following a report of a body floating near the shoreline of Waimea River. Personnel from the Kauai Fire Department arrived on scene and brought the individual to shore. Medics immediately began lifesaving measures, but despite efforts, resuscitation was unsuccessful. The individual was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

According to witnesses, the individual, who may have been impaired at the time, was offshore in a kayak when a wave capsized the vessel.

The individual was identified as Angel Tapia, a 60-year-old man with no permanent address.
