The Electronic Products Recycling Association says one of the most important things people should do before getting rid of their devices is to make sure their personal information is wiped.

The association takes everything from tablets to hairdryers at their drop-off locations.

Program coordinator Michelle Marley says the process for recycling is simple – people just have to drive to a location and leave their device.

Marley says it is important for people to take any personal information off of devices before getting rid of them.

She encourages people to take ownership of their personal data. She adds that devices are “basically shredded” when they are recycled, and broken down into their individual components to be sent back out into the supply chain.
