DULUTH — Students at East High School have been following white rabbits, dancing with lobsters, playing croquet and also learning about how to grow up and deal with heartbreak and loss while preparing the fall musical "Alice by Heart."

Loosely inspired by "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," the musical was developed by the Tony and Grammy award-winning creators of "Spring Awakening," Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, and co-written by Jessie Nelson of "Waitress" fame.

"Alice by Heart" invites audiences on a journey through the rubble of the London Blitz, where teenager Alice Spencer, played by senior Bea Martin, finds her life is upended as she and her close friend Alfred seek refuge in an underground tube station. When Alfred becomes gravely ill and is quarantined, Alice encourages him to
