Southwestern Ontario’s auto sector received another blow on Tuesday after General Motors (GM) Canada announced it was ending the production of its BrightDrop electric-vehicle cargo van, which was assembled at the Cami plant in Ingersoll.
The company said the decision to end production is the result of poor sales of the vehicle, of which GM sold about 2,000 units in Canada and the U.S. in 2024, with officials saying the market for the van, coupled with the end of tax credits for electric vehicles in the U.S., resulted in a much weaker market than expected.
