Heavy demolition machines rolled into the East Wing of the White House on Monday, kicking up dust and headlines as a section of the iconic structure in the American capital was being torn down to make way for US President Donald Trump's long-cherished ballroom plan. As images of crumbling walls and gutted interiors made the rounds online, the demolition drew sharp criticism, especially for its timing as the government shutdown enters its third chaotic week.
Crews began the partial demolition of the East Wing to make way for Donald Trump's $250million ballroom project, which is a proposed 90,000-square-foot glass-walled structure expected to host up to 999 guests, reported news agency Associated Press.
To add to that, the White House went ahead with the construction without waiting for
