: Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira on Tuesday said tourism is progressing in Meghalaya.

“Those days in 1965 (when) I visited Cherrapunjee, there was nothing but now there are many good hotels and many people have become rich and they are constructing good hotels,” Shira told reporters.

According to him, tourism has become a significant source of income for local communities, with many people benefiting from the industry.

The minister informed that the government is taking steps to expand the Umroi airport, which will enable bigger aircraft to land and bring more tourists to the state.

He also mentioned the upcoming expansion of the Baljek Airport in Garo Hills.
