MONROE, La. (KNOE) - More than 180 middle school students got a hands-on look at what it’s like to work in healthcare during the “Get into the Guts” health career event at ULM’s Bayou Pointe.

Hosted by ULM and the Northeast Louisiana Healthcare Alliance, the event gave students a chance to rotate through interactive booths and talk directly with medical professionals, from dental hygienists to EMTs.

“There’s all the high school career exposures and job fairs, but we’re learning from employers that we need to get to students younger so that they are aware of the opportunities that are available to them,” said Terri Mitchell, convener of the Northeast Louisiana Healthcare Alliance.

Mitchell says the goal is to show kids that healthcare is more than just doctors and nurses.
