Miami Heat rookie Kasparas Jakučionis has been ruled out of playing on Wednesday in their season opener against the Orlando Magic due to a groin injury, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel.
Jakučionis was limited to two preseason appearances with the Heat because of various injuries, with the latest setback occurring on Oct. 12 against the Magic. He hasn't practiced since that loss and will not travel with the team to Central Florida.
The injury isn't serious, and the 20th pick is considered day-to-day moving forward. The Heat face the Memphis Grizzlies on the road on Friday before returning to Miami for their home opener on Saturday against the New York Knicks.
Jakučionis missed the first two preseason games for the Heat due to a sprained left wrist. He debuted on Oct. 8, producing eight points, 10 assists, two steals and one block in a loss against the San Antonio Spurs. He was limited to four minutes before leaving early against the Magic.
The 19-year-old was highly touted out of Illinois thanks to his ability to score at all three levels, playmaking, vision and passing. He was voted as the biggest steal of the draft in the annual survey of general managers released earlier this month.
Jakučionis could have the opportunity for a larger role than initially expected once he is cleared to return to action, with Tyler Herro sidelined due to a foot injury. The team has been impressed by his competitiveness, intensity and motor since starting training camp last month.
