ALBANY, New York (WWNY) - Robert Brooks Jr., the son of the inmate killed in a Utica-area prison, was in Albany on Tuesday, calling on the governor to sign a prison reform act into law. It comes one day after an Adams man was found guilty of murder and manslaughter, while two other defendants were acquitted.
Brooks is advocating for several changes, including expanding camera coverage, requiring video of in-custody deaths to be shared with the attorney general, and expanding oversight of the state’s corrections commission.
Albany-area attorney Paul DerOhannsian kept up on the trial.
“I think the debate over duty to intervene by law enforcement, corrections officers, and even others who deal in direct care in our institutions is going to be subject to debate,” he said.
