In a much anticipated decision, city council unanimously voted at a special meeting Monday to support a proposal for extended hours at the Stratford Connection Centre to act as a temporary warming shelter during the winter months.

This decision means that the Canadian Mental Health Association Huron Perth-operated facility, which is currently open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, will extend its hours during the winter to be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. seven days a week.

“That would mean that someone who’s unsheltered would only have to be outside in the cold weather for three hours at the most, but it would give us the ability to do any change-over that we need to do for the day and also for staffing issues as well,” said Canadian Mental Health Association H
