LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Over 350,000 people in Texas could lose their food assistance benefits if the federal government shutdown continues past a specific date.

Texas officials announced that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be halted if the federal shutdown extends beyond October 27.

The program is a vital food resource for residents in Texas’s 28th District, which includes Laredo. If benefits are lost, many residents may have to rely on local food banks for assistance. This could put additional pressure on these organizations to meet the increased demand during the shutdown.

The 28th District includes portions of South Texas and the border region, where SNAP benefits provide essential nutrition support for hundreds of thousands of residents.
