ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — It's National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and a property in Elmira that once had lead found in it is now open for people to live in.
A historical home built in 1876 by Jackson Richardson was completely damaged by its previous tenants. The property also had lead in the paint on the outside.
"Our last tenant left it in a very sad state, and we closed it down for about a year to do the rehab. The rehab is done, and at the same time we were finishing up, we had a problem with lead paint on the exterior of the building," said Susan Skidmore, Near Westside Neighborhood Association Director.
The property got remodeled completely inside and out. The roof was replaced, and all potential lead hazards were removed.
"There's nothing worse than watching a property degrade.
