HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) - Doctors say they are seeing a spike in Hand Foot and Mouth disease cases.

Health leaders say it’s most commonly found in children, and it’s highly contagious.

The disease spreads through the air and on surfaces.

According to the CDC, symptoms include fever, sore throat, sores around the mouth, and a rash around hands and feet.

To stop the disease from spreading, the CDC advises to wash your hands often, avoid touching your face, frequently clean surfaces, and avoid contact with those infected.

“This virus is caused by oxsackievirus. It’s a kind of a typical summer time and fall virus except this new strain, the A6 strain, is new, and that is why it’s so contagious and so many people are dealing with it,” says Jennifer Liles, owner of Premier Pediatrics and Well
