Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to compel House Speaker Mike Johnson to administer the oath of office to Adelita Grijalva, the newly elected Democratic representative from Arizona. Grijalva won the September 23, 2025, special election to fill the seat previously held by her late father, Raúl Grijalva, but despite her certified victory, she remains unsworn and unable to assume her duties.
The lawsuit argues that the delay has left more than 800,000 Arizona constituents without full representation in Congress. It asks the court to issue a judgment stating that if Speaker Johnson continues to withhold the oath, Grijalva may take it before any person legally authorized to administer oaths.
