SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The murder of his father has made Robert Brooks Jr. a poster child for prison reform.
A day after two former correction officers were acquitted on charges that they murdered his father, Brooks was in Albany calling on the governor to enact legislation designed to improve the prison system.
"They were doing what their supervisors told them to do," Brooks said. "I can't be totally mad at them, but I'm more mad at the system that allows that to go on."
Brooks joined the group "End Prison Violence" at the State Capitol on Thursday, October 21. He was among the advocates touting a bill already passed by both houses of the State Legislature.
Among its many proposed changes, the bill requires 24-hour video surveillance of prison common areas, quicker notification o
