STERLING, Ill. (KWQC) - Big changes could be coming to Sterling’s riverfront.

Sterling is one of seven cities across the state of Illinois to receive incentives from the River Edge Redevelopment Zone Program (RERZ) to help revive and redevelop environmentally challenged properties next to rivers across the state.

Revitalizing the riverfront is a project that’s been in the works for over a decade, city leaders said.

They’re hoping to grow the area by providing commercial developers with tax incentives .

The area the city is working on covers a large portion of the river’s edge, which you can see on the map below.

There are other stipulations to qualify for the incentives besides being next to a river, like having at least 100 acres of environmentally challenged land within 1,500 yard
