President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would ultimately decide whether the federal government should pay him compensation for the criminal investigations pursued against him before his second term.
Asked about a New York Times report that he is seeking about $230 million from the Justice Department for those probes, Trump replied, “Could be,” adding that he was unsure of the amount and had not spoken to officials about it. “All I know is that they would owe me a lot of money,” he said.
Trump suggested he could donate any repayment to charity or use it to help fund a new ballroom under construction at the White House. “It’s interesting, ’cause I’m the one that makes the decision, right?” he said. “That decision would have to go across my desk.”
