Gundy the wombat's short life has not been easy.
His mother was hit and killed by a car in the New South Wales Hunter Valley last year when he was five months old.
Baby Gundy survived in his mother's pouch and was handed in to Judith Hopper from Hunter Wildlife Rescue.
"The little ones can live in the pouch for several days, so anybody that sees a dead [wombat] body and stops and checks … we can save the baby wombat,"
she said.
"At the time, he didn't seem to have much in the way of injuries … [but] he did develop some neurological problems."
Ms Hopper suspected there were other issues at play when she watched Gundy walk.
An assessment by Sydney-based animal ophthalmologist Kelly Caruso confirmed the marsupial was blind.
"He's a bit of a unique case because the eyes didn't look ter
