WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - As the federal government shutdown threatens programs, localized efforts aim to keep beneficiaries covered. Among those impacted programs is WIC, which stands for Women, Infants and Children. As that name indicates, the program is intended to supplement nutrition for pregnant women, mothers with breastfeeding or formula-dependent babies, and young children, providing free, healthy foods. Nationwide, millions benefit from the program.

On Tuesday, 12 News spoke with Sedgwick County about how it’s keeping WIC going for the thousands of people in the county who depend on the assistance. Locally, the program is okay for now, as far as funding goes, but that could look different if the government shutdown lasts beyond the end of this month.
