As voters weigh whether to support Proposition 50 — the ballot measure that could create five new congressional districts that favor Democrats — Republicans in the state’s congressional delegation are weighing their political futures.

The proposition, which would suspend the state’s current congressional maps that were drawn by an independent redistricting commission through 2030, targets five Republican seats held by Reps. Doug LaMalfa, Kevin Kiley, David Valadao, Ken Calvert and Darrell Issa.

Perhaps the only Republican that potentially benefits from the redraw if Prop 50 passes is the state’s only GOP congresswoman, Rep. Young Kim. Kim currently represents the 40th district in Orange County.
