SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Hundreds of thousands of Missourians may soon lose their food stamps, and a Missouri lawmaker says there’s not much the state can do to help.
Missouri is among several states warning that food stamp funding may not be available for November. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federally funded program, and its funding is likely to resume only after the federal government shutdown ends.
This is not an area where the state government usually intervenes, as Ranking Member of the Budget Committee State Rep. Betsy Fogle explains.
“There’s nowhere in the state budget to pull that money from, in the existing budget. In order for us to backfill those dollars, the governor would have to call us back for a special session,” State Rep. Fogle said.
