NEW ORLEANS — One of the worst decisions that Governor Jeff Landry and state lawmakers have made was ditching Louisiana’s open primary system for all federal and some state elections, and reverting to separate party primaries.

That decision was rushed, in a special legislative session Landry called right after taking office early last year. Reverting to party primaries requires holding more elections, which costs us taxpayers millions.

It also forces candidates to raise more campaign money, making them even more beholden to special interests rather than to us voters. Now, lawmakers are going back into yet another special session because the U.S. Supreme Court is considering a challenge to Louisiana’s congressional district map.
