ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - On Tuesday, Georgia’s Public Service Commission (PSC) started three days of hearings around a proposal to add 10 gigawatts to Georgia Power’s energy grid, prioritized for data centers.

A PSC spokesperson said 80% of the proposed energy would go to serving data centers, many focusing on artificial intelligence, that are already in the state and those expected to come to Georgia in the coming years.

Ten gigawatts can power roughly 9 million homes, though it depends on the energy usage.

The commission, with just three of the five members present for the hearing, is expected to vote on the proposal in December. Commissioners heard roughly four hours of public comment before Georgia Power detailed the proposal and heard from expert witnesses.
