Fort Wayne City Council members said Tuesday they support city officials moving forward with two miles of trail and road improvements along Illinois Road.
The work is expected to cost $9 million, covered by a $1 million Next Level Trails grant, $9,000 in donor funds and $6.2 million approved by the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission last week. The redevelopment funds will come from tax increment financing, which is a tool that allows taxes on future gains in real estate values to pay for new infrastructure.
Local income taxes will cover the remainder. Council gave initial approval to the project Tuesday.
The 10-foot-wide trail will run from Getz Road to Rockhill Park with access to Jefferson Pointe, Parkwest Shopping Center and other businesses and restaurants along Illinois Road. It w
