BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The Alabama State Department of Education is seeking public feedback on an updated school counseling model, the first revision to the guidance framework in more than 20 years.

State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey said the department is behind when it comes to guidance for school counselors and it’s time for an update. The new plan is shorter and more concise, and for the first time includes a clear way for schools to review and evaluate their guidance programs.

Age-specific focus areas

The updated model includes specific emphasis areas for each age group that school counselors will focus on.

Elementary students will receive guidance on character development and coping skills, while high school students will focus on personal responsibility and decision
