South Australia's Attorney-General has called for a review of the decision to release Snowtown killer James Vlassakis on parole, the ABC can reveal.
In August, the South Australian Parole Board announced its decision to release Vlassakis after he served 26 years of his life sentence.
Parole Administrative Review Commissioner Michael David KC confirmed the appeal had been lodged.
A directions hearing on the review will be called on in the coming weeks.
Parole Board chair Frances Nelson KC previously said she believed Vlassakis was "genuinely remorseful", and was a suitable candidate for parole.
Vlassakis, now aged in his mid 40s, was the youngest of the four perpetrators involved in the "bodies-in-the-barrels" serial killings between 1992 to 1999.
