SPEEDWAY, Ind. — You may have heard the sound of speed if you drove near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tuesday morning.

Before the rain rolled in, IndyCar drivers took test laps on the oval in preparation for next May's Indianapolis 500.

This test wasn't really for the teams. It was for IndyCar to test parts, for Firestone to test tires. But the drivers will take all the laps they can get at a place like Indy.

"Just enjoying driving around IMS in an IndyCar on a sunny day in October," said 2016 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi.

"I think the question is, what did Firestone learn today? You know, we were testing all types of tires for them to improve the race tire for next year, and there was definitely one of them that was way better than the other ones. So I really hope they listen to
