MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Leaders in Morristown adopted changes for a meeting space after a letter citing religious freedom concerns by the state Attorney General.
It affects the farmers' market and the downtown green. Leaders struck out a section saying "no political or religious activities could happen area." They also made changes to address market activities for vendors.
The Attorney General sent a letter last month to the city, saying it could violate the state human rights act for not allowing religious activities on the property. This stems from a person wanting to host a prayer vigil for political activist Charlie Kirk two months ago.
City leaders said the permit was denied because of a lack of notice and the space not being available.
