Peru's newly appointed president has announced a state of emergency in the capital on Tuesday, as part of the government's latest efforts to curb the escalating violence that has sparked protests and led to the recent ousting of his predecessor. ‌

The South American nation has witnessed a rise in murders, violent extortion and attacks on public spaces over the past few years. From January to September, police reported 1,690 homicides, a significant increase from the 1,502 recorded during the same period in 2024. ‌
