The Governor of NSW has described Gunnedah as a town that "looks after each other".

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC and Mr Dennis Wilson are visiting Gunnedah, Narrabri and Tamworth this week.

On Wednesday, Ms Beazley was briefed in Gunnedah council chambers.

She said she was keen to learn "what is going on in Gunnedah".

"What are the great things that are happening, [and] what are the challenges," she said.

Ms Beazley said discussions quickly turned to water, "which is a challenge across the country, not only across regional and rural NSW".

"As Governor, unless I know what is happening across the state, I feel as though I am not doing my job," she said.

"So I choose to come to as many of the regional towns as I can.
