NEW YORK —Bryant Gumbel, the former longtime host of NBC’s morning news show “Today,” was taken to a hospital Monday night because of a “medical emergency.”

TMZ reports Gumbel, 77, was transported by ambulance at about 9 p.m. from his apartment building in Manhattan. He was still in the hospital Tuesday afternoon, TMZ reports.

A family member tells TMZ that Gumbel is OK but would not offer additional details.

Gumbel began his career in sports broadcasting but took over as a co-host of “Today” in 1982. He remained with the show until 1997.

He also was the longtime host of “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” on HBO. The show won a Peabody Award in 2012. He retired from the show and broadcasting in 2023.
