In August 2012, the cricketing world was stunned when Kevin Pietersen, fresh off a commanding 149-run innings at Headingley, was unexpectedly dropped from England’s playing XI for the next Test against South Africa. It was a rare move in professional cricket, where a century usually guarantees continued selection, unless injuries intervene.

The reason, however, was far from ordinary. Pietersen had sent a controversial text message to South African players, targetting England captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower.

Reports claimed the message contained insulting language, including the word “doos", a South African term that can mean “idiot" or worse. Some accounts suggested Pietersen even offered tactical advice on dismissing Strauss to the opposition.
